Triangle of Health: Exercise, Nutrition & Rest

The triangle of exercise, nutrition and rest is a good way to create a formula for fitness and health. Making good choices in these 3 areas is the key to achieving your fitness goals. It is the key to living a long and healthy life. This basic formula gives you an outline for making these choices. There are many choices possible, both healthy and unhealthy, and many shades of gray in between. This overview gives you a context for all the details. It's not necessary that every choice be healthy, just the majority of choices. Let's face it, we live in a world of lots of tasty junk food, and to deny yourself completely most likely will ensure failure and binge eating. The key to making healthy choices in eating is to put nutrition first, and taste second, yet still make sure it tastes decent. Many overweight people make the mistake of listening to their tastes buds and ignoring their stomach and bodies. This tendency is ingrained in us from childhood.

 

Some people's goal is to gain weight. Though in the minority, this is fairly widespread over the population, crossing boundaries of race, nation and sex. In my experience, I have sometimes encountered people who I thought were already heavy, and wanted to gain more weight, as well as people who were thin, and wanted to lose weight. I think it's important to follow healthy guidelines, and yet we all have free will. I respect whatever choice you make, just recognize that if you go too far in one direction or another, you may very well end up in the doctor's office.

 

My experience has been that doctor's will tell you (and I am not a doctor) that as long as your weight is mainly muscle, you can gain quite a bit of weight and still be healthy. Having said that, it is generally thought that a leaner physique is better for a disease free and long life. However, many guys that want to bulk up don't particularly care about longevity. My feeling is there is plenty of room in the world for variety, whatever your desires. Just be aware of what you want, and take care of yourself the best way you can.
